Nadir Mohamed, the former President and CEO of Rogers Communications, has sadly passed away at the age of 69.
While the cause of his death has not yet been disclosed, Mohamed's legacy in the telecommunications industry is undeniably significant.
Joining Rogers in August 2000, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the president and CEO of Rogers Wireless from 2001 to 2005. In 2005, he took on the role of president and COO of Rogers Communications Group, ultimately succeeding company founder Ted Rogers as President and CEO in March 2009. He would maintain this esteemed position until his retirement in late 2013.
Under Mohamed's stewardship, Rogers experienced transformative growth, solidifying its status as one of Canada's largest wireless carriers. He adeptly navigated the company through turbulent times marked by fierce competition and rapid technological evolution.
In 2013, Mohamed played a crucial role in negotiating a record-breaking $5.2 billion deal for exclusive NHL broadcast rights—an achievement that showcased his strategic acumen and passion for Canadian sports.
Edward Rogers, Executive Chair of Rogers, expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, "Nadir was an exceptional leader and a generous person who led Rogers during an extraordinary time of change. He contributed immensely to our long-term success and our community."
Tony Staffieri, current President and CEO of Rogers, remembered Mohamed as a 'pivotal leader' who was deeply committed to fostering innovation within the Canadian business landscape. "He was a gracious leader, and a true class act," Staffieri added, extending his thoughts to the Mohamed family during this trying time.
After his tenure at Rogers, Mohamed co-founded ScaleUp Ventures, aimed at supporting tech startups across Canada. He also chaired Digital Media Zone (DMZ) Ventures at Toronto Metropolitan University and served as chair of Alignvest Management Corp. until last year. His contributions extended to the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and various philanthropic boards, including Tennis Canada and the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation.
In recognition of his remarkable entrepreneurial journey and community engagement, Mohamed was awarded the Order of Canada in 2019, solidifying his impact beyond the corporate world.
As we reflect on Nadir Mohamed's incredible contributions to Rogers Communications and Canadian society, his vision and leadership will be sorely missed.
