A new arrest has been made in connection with the violent demonstrations that recently shook Peel Region, highlighting escalating tensions in the community. This latest individual was charged following a clash that unfolded outside the Hindu Sabha Temple on The Gore Road in Brampton last Sunday evening.
According to Peel Regional Police (PRP), a series of violent incidents occurred during the protests on November 3, many of which were captured on footage. Eyewitnesses reported that individuals armed with flags and sticks engaged in assaults against one another during these demonstrations.
One suspect, identified as 35-year-old Brampton resident Inderjeet Gosal, was arrested on November 8 and faces charges of assault with a weapon. He has since been released under certain conditions and is due to appear in court in Brampton soon.
Tensions have notably intensified between the Hindu and Sikh communities in the aftermath of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's remarks regarding "credible allegations" linking the Indian government to the assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia last year. In addition, Ottawa has accused India's home minister, Amit Shah, of targeting Sikh activists, claims that the Indian government has categorically denied.
In response to the ongoing violence, PRP stated that conflicts escalated during demonstrations, leading to physical altercations. In a proactive move, the police have established a specialized investigative unit aimed at addressing the recent "incidents of criminality" associated with these public gatherings. As of now, law enforcement has arrested and charged five individuals in relation to the demonstrations.
Arrest warrants have also been issued for two more suspects: 24-year-old Armaan Gahlot from Kitchener and 22-year-old Arpit (no surname provided), who does not have a fixed address. They face serious charges including uttering threats of death or bodily harm, conspiracy to commit assault with a weapon, and conspiracy to commit mischief. Authorities are calling on these suspects to seek legal representation and surrender to the police.
Moreover, an off-duty officer from the Peel Police service has been suspended amid allegations related to the November 3 demonstration, pending an internal investigation.
The PRP has emphasized the complexity of these cases, urging the public to be patient as investigations unfold. The police are meticulously examining a trove of videos from the protests to identify additional suspects, indicating that more arrests are likely on the horizon.
Authorities are appealing to anyone with information or video footage related to these demonstrations to come forward. Reports can be made directly to the PRP at their divisional numbers or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
The situation remains fluid, and community members are urged to stay informed as developments arise in this volatile and concerning situation. How will this escalating violence affect community relations in Peel Region? Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds!
