Measles Threatens Schools in the Southeast

A concerning measles outbreak that has already impacted the U.S. and Canada has now arrived in the Southeast, causing alarm among parents and health officials alike.

Recent Exposures at École Dugald School

Children at École Dugald School in Dugald were potentially exposed to the virus on several days: April 29, April 30, and May 2, between 8:45 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. Families are being urged to monitor for symptoms until May 24.

Rising Case Numbers in Manitoba

The crisis is escalating, with confirmed cases in Manitoba reaching a staggering 44. The bulk of these cases emerged in May, with 26 reported, following 12 in April.

Understanding Measles—The Highly Contagious Virus

Measles is alarmingly contagious and spreads through droplets when an infected person sneezes or coughs. It can remain airborne for days, meaning individuals may unknowingly have been exposed.

Check Your Vaccine Status Now!

Southern Health is strongly recommending that everyone review their immunization records. Ensuring you are up-to-date with the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV) is crucial, particularly if you suspect possible exposure.

Who is at Risk?

People born before 1970 or those who have been vaccinated have a significantly lower risk of contracting measles. However, it’s essential for anyone born in 1970 or later, who hasn’t received the vaccine or had a prior infection, to remain vigilant.

Symptoms to Watch For!

Symptoms could appear anywhere from 7 to 21 days post-exposure and often start with fever, runny nose, cough, and red eyes. A distinctive rash may emerge 3 to 7 days later, typically starting on the face and moving downward.

Complications Can Be Serious!

Complications from measles can be severe, leading to conditions such as pneumonia and brain inflammation, which can result in long-term health issues or even death. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, with links to miscarriage and low birth weight in infants.

What to Do If You Think You’ve Been Exposed!

Should symptoms arise, it's important to stay home, isolate yourself, and contact your healthcare provider while informing them of your potential exposure. Always call ahead before visiting a healthcare facility to enable them to prepare for your arrival.

Stay Informed and Stay Safe!

With measles making a comeback in the Southeast, staying informed is your best defense. Don’t let this virus catch you off guard—take steps to protect your health and the health of those around you!
