The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of Ontario has initiated an investigation following a police-involved shooting in Ottawa's Place d'Orléans, where a 33-year-old man was shot and critically injured. The incident occurred late Friday night, as the suspect was allegedly attacking individuals and causing damage to vehicles near St. Joseph Boulevard and Place d'Orléans Drive.

Preliminary reports indicate that the man was engaged in assaults on civilians when police arrived at the scene. Upon confronting him, an Ottawa Police Service officer discharged their firearm, wounding the suspect multiple times. Additionally, officers attempted to subdue him using two conducted energy weapons—commonly known as Tasers.

The suspect was promptly taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition as of Saturday. In the chaos of the incident, four civilians sustained injuries and were treated for non-life-threatening conditions.

The SIU has stated that it is as yet unclear what weapons, if any, the suspect used during his aggressive actions. To assist with the investigation, five SIU investigators and two forensic officers have been assigned.

In a call to the public, the SIU is encouraging anyone with information regarding the incident, particularly those with video or photographic evidence, to reach out to the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or via their website.

This alarming incident has raised questions about public safety in Ottawa, as it comes amid increasing concerns over violent crime in urban areas. Community members are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Stay tuned for updates as this investigation unfolds.
