Big news in the world of late-night television: Comedy Central's iconic series, 'The Daily Show,' is hitting pause for a full five weeks, returning on September 8, 2025! But is this break linked to the recent cancellations of other shows? Not quite!
Despite speculation that Jonathan Stewart and his team might be next on the chopping block at new Paramount, insiders have confirmed that this extended hiatus has been in the works for months. "Just to let you guys know, we’re going on a production break for August, which was planned months and months ago. So don’t freak out!" host Desi Lydic reassured fans at the end of last Thursday’s episode.
Comedy Central is directing attention to this planned hiatus with commercials, ensuring fans know they're on a temporary break—instead of panic mode!
This isn’t the first time 'The Daily Show' has taken an extended summer break. Back in 2021, when Trevor Noah was hosting, the staff took a whopping three months off. And in 2015, the show took a seven-week hiatus between Jon Stewart's departure and Trevor Noah’s debut. Clearly, taking time off is part of 'The Daily Show' tradition!
In recent weeks, the show has ridden a wave of success, with Josh Johnson’s debut winning rave reviews and drawing in massive audience numbers, even surpassing Stewart among the coveted 18-49 demographic.
While the show is on break, Johnson is making the most of his time off with a stand-up tour across 14 cities. Fans can also expect appearances from Stewart and Jordan Klepper on the comedy circuit.
In the meantime, Comedy Central plans to fill the 11 PM ET timeslot with reruns of other fan favorites—catch 'Family Guy' this Monday and Tuesday, followed by 'South Park' midweek!
