Walmart Heist Takes a Dangerous Turn

A routine shopping trip turned into chaos at the Unicity Walmart when four teens, including two just 13 years old, sparked a dramatic armed robbery incident on Tuesday afternoon.

The Face-Off with Security

Things escalated when a 13-year-old boy brandished a CO2-powered airgun, aiming it at a store security officer who had apprehended another member of their group. The adolescent fired but fortunately missed.

Caught Red-Handed

The group—comprised of a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy—had stuffed their backpacks with stolen merchandise and attempted to flee without paying, only to be stopped by vigilant store security. Nearby police officers quickly intervened, capturing two suspects inside and two others outside the store.

Witnesses Describe a Harrowing Scene

Witness Lisa Andreone recounted the terror she faced as she entered the store. "I heard a commotion and turned to see a woman being grabbed by a man, presumably loss prevention," she explained. In the midst of the chaos, she spotted the young boy pointing a gun at security, demanding the release of his accomplice.

A Community in Fear

Shaken by the brazen act of violence, Andreone and her family fled to safety. She expressed her fear, stating, "I don’t feel safe going back to that Walmart with my kids. We frequent it often, but that might change drastically now." This incident has left many locals reconsidering their faith in community safety.

Rising Crime Rates in Winnipeg

This alarming robbery coincides with a disturbing uptick in retail thefts in Winnipeg, with reported cases soaring 41.1% between 2023 and 2024. Despite some initial optimism from retailers regarding improvements, violent incidents are still alarmingly common.

Retail Security Under Scrutiny

In response to these rising threats, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced that the province will enhance its strategies against retail crime. A new task force is in place to review security measures, including updating the licensing policies for security guards to better empower them in conflict situations.

Charges Filed Against Young Offenders

As for the perpetrators, the 13-year-old boy faces serious charges including armed robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon. His 13-year-old accomplice has also been charged, alongside a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, all facing various counts of armed robbery.
