A Breakthrough in Modern Alchemy!
The dream of transforming lead into gold, a prominent goal of medieval alchemists, has finally made strides—if only for mere moments. Researchers at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, have successfully converted lead into gold using the extraordinary Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator known to humanity.
How Does This Work?
Unlike the magical transformations depicted in fairy tales, CERN's groundbreaking experiments involve the high-speed collision of subatomic particles. By smashing lead ions together, scientists recreate conditions reminiscent of the universe just after the Big Bang, generating incredibly hot and dense matter. During these collisions, they observed occasions where lead nuclei would lose neutrons or protons. Given that lead has only three more protons than gold, these near-misses occasionally allow lead atoms to drop enough protons to temporarily manifest as gold.
The Results: A Tiny Glimmer of Gold!
Between 2015 and 2018, researchers managed to produce around 29 picograms of gold—an infinitesimal amount. However, thanks to ongoing upgrades at the LHC, subsequent experiments nearly doubled this yield. Yet, even with these advancements, the gold created remains trillions of times less than what’s needed to craft even a modest piece of jewelry.
Scientific Pursuits Over Wealth!
While the alchemical allure of gold may tempt many, the focus for CERN scientists is not on amassing riches but rather on deepening their understanding of the phenomena that enable such transmutation. "It's remarkable that our detectors can handle the chaotic collisions producing thousands of particles while remaining sensitive to the rarer events where only a few particles emerge, thus allowing us to study processes like electromagnetic nuclear transmutation," shared Marco Van Leeuwen, spokesperson for the A Large Ion Collider Experiment project at the LHC.
The Future of Particle Physics!
This monumental finding not only demonstrates the capabilities of the LHC but also paves the way for exciting possibilities in particle physics and our understanding of the universe. Who knows what other secrets may lie waiting to be uncovered in the collision of particles?
