From Mumbai to Saskatchewan: A Journey of Passion

Starting his journey as a virologist in Mumbai, India, Banerjee’s path led him to the National Institute of Virology in Pune. There, he earned a prestigious European summer fellowship in Germany, which proved pivotal. A chance meeting at a conference opened doors to researchers at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), where Banerjee delved into cutting-edge bat virology.

Pioneering Bat Research in Canada

At USask, Banerjee has made substantial contributions to bat research, notably developing the first commercially available North American bat cell line—an essential tool for his lab. "Bat research was really in its infancy at the time. I had the opportunity to innovate in this field, which is now central to my work,” he shared.

The Quest for Viral Solutions

Banerjee’s laboratory at VIDO is on the frontline of studying bats’ unique immune systems, aiming to create therapeutics that protect humans from emerging viral threats. His passion for discovery drives his scientific endeavors. "The little things you discover as a scientist, the knowledge that’s uniquely yours until it’s published—there’s nothing quite like it. That excitement is infectious in my lab,” he concluded.
