Revolutionizing Audio: Google and Samsung Unveil Eclipsa Audio Support for Chrome and Android

In an exciting development, Google has announced that Eclipsa Audio support is on its way to Chrome and Android platforms. This revelation follows Samsung's early 2025 announcement about their participation in this groundbreaking initiative.

Eclipsa Audio is described as an open-source spatial audio format aimed at democratizing audio experiences for users. Developed collaboratively by tech giants Google and Samsung, along with other contributors from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), Eclipsa Audio is built on the Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF). This means it leverages advanced technology to deliver rich, immersive sound experiences that capture users like never before.

The Open Audio team at Google notes that while spatial audio technology has roots that stretch back over five decades, its creation has traditionally been reserved for industry professionals, particularly in film and music. However, Eclipsa Audio changes the game by allowing anyone to create immersive audio files using readily available audio tools.

Later this spring, Google plans to release a free Eclipsa Audio plugin for the popular AVID Pro Tools Digital Audio Workstation. In the meantime, enthusiasts can experiment with Eclipsa Audio through a freely available open-source reference renderer, enabling spatial audio playback right in their web browsers via the Binaural Web Demo Application.

Creators on YouTube can also look forward to uploading videos featuring Eclipsa Audio tracks, which is set to broaden the horizons for content creation on the platform. Furthermore, Samsung's upcoming TV models, including the Crystal UHD series and Neo QLED 8K, will feature native Eclipsa Audio playback, making the technology accessible to a wider audience.

While Google has yet to clarify if Eclipsa Audio support will initially be available on desktop, mobile, or both, they have confirmed that it will soon be integrated into an upcoming Android AOSP release. Additionally, users can expect to see TV and soundbar support from multiple manufacturers later in 2025.

In a bid to ensure quality and reliability, Samsung and Google will introduce a certification and brand licensing program, aiming to provide assurance to both manufacturers and consumers about the authenticity of Eclipsa Audio-compatible products.
