Obituary
Mary Kathleen Stebbins, formerly known as Rankine and Laughlin, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, at the age of 101. Born on January 2, 1924, in Milltown, New Brunswick, Mary led a vibrant life that touched the hearts of everyone who crossed her path.
A Woman of Many Talents
A woman of many talents, Mary had a passion for singing, often telling her children, 'One day, you will miss hearing my voice.' Now, as friends and family reflect on her warm spirit, that day has indeed arrived, leaving behind a treasure trove of memories and performances that can still be found on YouTube.
Early Life and Career
Mary’s journey began in a small town, where she grew up in a close-knit family. After completing her education at Miss Crabbe's Business College, she ventured to Ottawa to work as a stenographer for the Royal Canadian Air Force Headquarters. Inspired by the opportunity and driven by ambition, she enlisted in the Air Force. Although she later paused her military career to care for her family when her father fell ill, her commitment to serving her country remained steadfast.
A Life Full of Love and Family
Mary's life was undeniably full of love. She met her future husband, Guy (Chummy) Rankine, at a New Year’s Day dance, and within three months, they were married. Together, they raised four children—Mona, Don, Ted, and Max—in Scarborough, Ontario. During this time, Mary balanced her duties as a mother with various jobs, including working as an Avon Lady and as a switchboard operator for Eaton’s.
Finding Love Again
After tragically losing Chum in 1971, Mary found love again with Les Stebbins, whom she met while visiting her son Ted at the Delawana Inn in 1972. Their bond flourished as they split their time between Cottage Country and winters in Florida, where they married. With Les, she experienced the joys of travel, enjoying ocean cruises and the warmth of companionship until his passing in 1999.
Lifelong Learning and Legacy
Mary's zest for life was evident in her pursuit of knowledge. At the age of 79, she embraced modern technology by taking a computer course. Even in her later years, she amazed her family by learning to navigate an iPad, broadcasting live video on Facebook—all skills that showcased her dynamic spirit and willingness to adapt.
Surviving Family and Memorial
She is survived by her five children and an extensive family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom remember her fondly. Notably, her legacy lives on through the vibrant memories she created and shared with loved ones, as well as her memorable performances, which continue to resonate with those who cherished her.
Final Farewell
Mary's life celebrations will take place at a later date, post-cremation, with interment at St. Stephen Rural Cemetery. In honoring her memory, family and friends are invited to share their reflections and condolences online.
