Introduction

Since its inception in September 2022, the A-Town Runners, founded by Kendall Funk-Wieler, has been creating a welcoming space for individuals to come together through physical activity, regardless of the weather. This enthusiastic group meets every Saturday at 9 a.m. at TCE, braving rain, shine, or even snow, to enjoy a lap or two around Altona.

Building Connections Through Movement

Funk-Wieler emphasizes the joy and happiness derived from being active alongside others. Drawing from personal experiences in long-distance running, particularly in trail races, he recounts how the shared experience of running can foster meaningful connections. "It's amazing how a simple conversation during a run can turn strangers into friends within hours," he shared. Thus, the motivation behind A-Town Runners is to harness the power of movement to build community.

Inclusive Participation

Participants range in age and fitness level, with some opting to walk or bike instead of run. After approximately 30 minutes of exercise, the group reconvenes at TCE for hot chocolate and camaraderie, reinforcing the social aspect of their activities.

Adapting to Community Needs

Initially, A-Town Runners planned for a 30-to-40-minute 5K run, but the atmosphere quickly adapted. “We found ourselves chatting so much that we naturally slowed down,” Funk-Wieler explains, illustrating how community growth reshapes activity dynamics.

An Open Invitation

Contrary to assumptions that this group caters only to seasoned athletes, Funk-Wieler invites everyone to join, regardless of their fitness level. He understands that fear of judgment can deter many from participating in group activities. “Some may feel intimidated or unsure about joining in a public setting," he articulates. "But I’m committed to a policy that ensures no one is left behind. Whether you're aiming for an Ultra marathon or just starting with a local 5K, we can all learn and grow together.”

Promoting Inclusivity

The A-Town Runners have also made strides towards inclusivity through a partnership with the Curtis Klassen Memorial Fund, which contributes funds for essential gear and equipment for those who may struggle to afford them. Moreover, a collection of gently used gear is available for newcomers, ensuring that anyone can join the movement without financial burden.

Celebrating Movement Together

Funk-Wieler encourages people from all backgrounds to come together to celebrate the simple act of moving: “No matter who you are or where you're from, we can unite around a shared passion for human movement.”
