With heavy hearts, we share the profound loss of Dr. Wayne Peter Francis Gulliver, a remarkable physician and beloved family man who chose to end his life on his own terms.
Dr. Gulliver leaves behind his devoted wife Beverly, their daughters Susanne and Julia, along with son Andrew and grandson Lloyd. He will be deeply missed by his mother Agnes, brothers Gerry and Joe, and their families, as well as countless friends and colleagues across Canada and beyond.
The medical community mourns the passing of a dedicated and innovative leader. Dr. Gulliver was not only a husband and father but a trailblazer in dermatology, contributing invaluable research, including the groundbreaking discovery of the HLA-Cw6 gene for psoriasis. After earning his Bachelor of Science and MD from Memorial University, he completed his residency at McGill University and spent his career enhancing the field of dermatology.
In 1989, he returned to his roots in St. John’s, where he embraced a passion for clinical practice and research. Throughout his illustrious career, he received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Albert Neisser Award, considered dermatology's version of the Nobel Prize.
Dr. Gulliver's resilience was legendary. Even after facing a life-changing cancer diagnosis and subsequent amputation in 2015, he remained active in both research and practice. His spirit of inquiry took him around the world, where he was known for engaging actively at international conferences.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Gulliver was a proud supporter of his family, celebrating their milestones and accomplishments.
His legacy of kindness and commitment to his family and the community is one that will endure. As arrangements are made for the public to pay their respects, his family invites all who knew him to gather for visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home on the evenings of September 9 and 10, 2025. The funeral service will take place at Gower Street United Church on September 11, 2025, at 11 AM, streamed live for those unable to attend.
In memoriam, contributions may be made to the Vera Perlin Society or the Prosthetics Department at the Miller Centre. Dr. Gulliver's powerful impact on so many lives will forever resonate as a testament to living fully, advocating for justice, and embodying the essence of humanity.
