A wildfire in Moose Meadows, just west of Banff, has now been declared as 'being held' by Parks Canada. This positive update comes after the fire erupted Saturday afternoon.
The blaze, which has spread across approximately two hectares, sent smoke plumes visible from the Trans Canada Highway (Highway 1) and the scenic Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A).
To ensure the safety of both firefighters and motorists, authorities established a no-stopping zone along a two-kilometre stretch of Highway 1, urging caution for drivers in the area.
A concerted effort is underway with two ground crews from Parks Canada diligently battling the flames. Meanwhile, three helicopters have been dousing the fire from above, utilizing buckets of water collected from the nearby Bow River.
Thanks to cooler temperatures overnight, firefighters have successfully secured the fire's perimeter. As of Sunday morning, crews are committed to completely extinguishing the fire in the coming days.
Parks Canada reassures the public that the fire poses 'no risk' to the nearby communities of Banff or Lake Louise, as it is burning in an area previously affected by past wildfires and has been mechanically thinned.
As of now, the cause of the fire remains unknown; however, Parks Canada confirmed it was not linked to any prescribed burns, and there are no burn operations active in the park.
