Bradley Murdoch, the man convicted of the brutal murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio in 2001, has succumbed to throat cancer at the age of 67. His death occurred in the palliative care unit of Alice Springs Hospital, just a day after the 24th anniversary of the shocking crime.
Murdoch had been serving a life sentence in Alice Springs for the heinous act, which took place on a lonely stretch of highway near Barrow Creek in Australia's Northern Territory. The Northern Territory Police Force expressed regret that Murdoch died without revealing the whereabouts of Falconio's remains, denying the grieving family the closure they desperately sought.
In July 2001, Murdoch approached Falconio's vehicle under the pretense of helping with alleged mechanical issues. He then shot Falconio in the head and abducted his girlfriend, Joanne Lees. Miraculously, Lees managed to escape, hiding in the outback until she could signal for help.
Sentenced in 2005, Murdoch maintained his innocence throughout his life, even attempting to overturn his convictions on two occasions without success. His actions not only devastated Falconio's family but also inspired the chilling 2005 horror film 'Wolf Creek,' which echoes the harrowing events of that night.
In 2016, the Northern Territory implemented "no body, no parole" legislation, ensuring that Murdoch would not be eligible for parole unless he disclosed where Falconio's body was hidden, a detail he never revealed despite police efforts to engage him.
Falconio's father, Luciano, expressed his heartbreak in a recent interview, wishing for the chance to properly lay his son to rest. He lamented, "I know what happened but I don't know where he is." The Northern Territory Police remains dedicated to solving this grim mystery, offering a reward of up to A$500,000 for information leading to Falconio's remains.
Murdoch's family stated he always denied his involvement in the crime, claiming he was more than just the headlines, a sentiment overshadowed by the monstrous legacy of his actions.
