In a recent statement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver weighed in on the swirling controversy surrounding Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers. He emphasized that he had "never heard a whiff of anything" regarding potential salary-cap violations linked to Leonard's endorsement deal with Aspiration.
This topic gained traction after a podcast by Pablo Torre alleged that Leonard signed a hefty four-year, $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration in 2022, shortly after he joined the Clippers. Notably, Aspiration is the same company in which Clippers owner Steve Ballmer invested $50 million in 2021.
Silver expressed that while he doesn’t want to ban endorsement deals between players and sponsors that have connections to their teams, the ongoing investigation could prompt the league to evaluate whether new regulations are necessary.
Critics claim Leonard’s endorsement was a ‘no-show job’, allegedly structured in a way that it would become void if he ever departed from the Clippers. An anonymous source claimed the primary aim of this arrangement was to dodge the salary cap.
In response to these allegations, the Clippers have categorically denied any wrongdoing. They stated, "There is nothing unusual or untoward about team sponsors doing endorsement deals with players on the same team. Neither Steve nor the Clippers organization had any oversight of Kawhi's independent endorsement agreement with Aspiration. To say otherwise is flat-out wrong. The Clippers take NBA compliance extremely seriously and fully respect the league's rules, welcoming its investigation related to Aspiration."
Adding further intrigue to the situation, the NBA has previously scrutinized Leonard and his uncle, Dennis Robertson, over alleged inappropriate requests made during negotiations following his signing with the Clippers. Among these requests was the demand for guaranteed no-show endorsement deals.
