Exciting news is coming from NASA as the countdown towards the Artemis 2 mission intensifies! The colossal Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, set to carry astronauts back to the moon, is rapidly nearing completion.
Currently undergoing assembly at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the SLS is being stacked inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). Just recently, the rocket's conical stage adapter—critical for linking the core booster to its upper stages—was successfully attached to the structure.
A mere three days later, on April 15, NASA welcomed the interim cryogenic propulsion stage (ICPS) to the VAB after completing essential testing in the Multi-Payload Processing Facility. This is another significant step towards the Artemis 2 mission!
Once launched, the SLS will transport NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, onboard the Orion spacecraft. This crew will embark on an unprecedented journey, skirting around the moon before making a safe return to Earth.
Through the Artemis program, NASA aims not just to return humans to the moon but to establish a lasting presence there—a foundation for future crewed missions to Mars!
Remember, the Artemis 1 mission successfully launched in November 2022, sending an uncrewed Orion capsule on a remarkable 25-day journey to lunar orbit, splashing down in the Pacific upon its return. While Artemis 2 won’t enter lunar orbit, it will execute a thrilling loop around the moon on a trajectory that guarantees a safe journey back to Earth.
Stay tuned for more updates as NASA paves the way for humanity's next leap into space!
