A Terrifying Fall from Grace

In a shocking incident, a Vancouver woman is on the mend after a harrowing 18-meter fall down a mountainside near Squamish. Margaux Cohen, a 36-year-old adventure enthusiast known for sharing her hiking escapades on social media, sustained a broken leg during her descent from Tricouni Peak.

The Climb That Took a Dangerous Turn

Having just summited the peak with her companions—a friend, his cousin, and her beloved dog Zion—Cohen and her group faced a pivotal moment as they navigated their descent.

"We thought the trail was just over this little wall," she recounted from her hospital bed at Lions Gate Hospital. After assessing the down-climb, the group deemed it manageable, unaware of the peril that lay ahead.

A Heart-Stopping Moment

As the group began their descent, disaster struck when Cohen's dog slipped off a ledge. In a split second instinct, she reached out for Zion, only to lose her own footing.

"I hit my head multiple times while falling, and then landed on a flat rock, breaking my leg in the process," Cohen described the traumatic experience.

The Aftermath: Pain and Panic

Remarkably, Cohen did not lose consciousness during her terrifying tumble, a fact she wishes were different.

"I vividly remember every moment of my fall. My face was swollen and bleeding after hitting rocks. When I looked at my leg, I knew something was seriously wrong—its shape was completely off. I started screaming, not sure whether it was from pain or shock," she shared.

Rescue in the Nick of Time

Help arrived two hours later as Squamish Search and Rescue hovered overhead and airlifted her to the hospital.

"In that heat, without shade, two hours felt like an eternity," she noted.

A Road to Recovery

Surgeons at Lions Gate operated on Cohen's leg, planning for a second surgery soon. The good news? Besides her injury, she appears to have escaped significant trauma to her head or internal organs, and Zion was unharmed.

Gratitude Amidst the Chaos

"I truly believe someone was watching over me that day," Cohen reflected. Her appreciation also extends to her friend Max, who she credited for handling the crisis beautifully, and to the Search and Rescue team, whom she admires deeply.

"I’ve followed their work online. One day, I hope to be part of their team!" Cohen expressed her enthusiasm for a future in rescue operations.
