Microsoft Introduces AI Features to Notepad

In a groundbreaking move, Microsoft is integrating artificial intelligence features into its classic Notepad application, originally launched in 1983. The new functionality, dubbed "Rewrite," is currently being rolled out in a preview version for Windows Insiders, allowing users to elevate their text editing experience.

What Does the Rewrite Feature Do?

So, what exactly does Rewrite do? This AI tool enables users to rephrase sentences, adjust the tone of their writing, and modify the overall length of their content seamlessly. As outlined in the Windows Insider Blog, users can easily highlight the text they want to alter, right-click to select the Rewrite option, and a dialog box will appear. Here, users can specify whether they want the text to be more concise or elaborated upon, and in return, Notepad will provide three rewritten alternatives for immediate replacement.

Accessing the Feature

However, there’s a catch: users need to sign in with their Microsoft account to access this feature, as it operates through a cloud-based service that mandates authentication. Currently, this feature is available for trial in select countries, including the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Notably, this launch follows a series of updates to Notepad earlier this year, which introduced spell check and autocorrect functionalities.

Additional AI Enhancements Across Microsoft Software

But that’s not all! Microsoft is also unveiling additional AI enhancements across its software suite. Windows Insiders can expect to test new AI image editing tools in Paint, including the innovative "Generative Fill" and "Generative Erase" options. The Generative Fill feature will allow users to add elements to images based on specific prompts, while the Generative Erase tool can intelligently remove parts of an image and blend the remaining area seamlessly. Initially, Generative Fill will be accessible to testers with the Copilot Plus PCs, while all Insiders will be able to enjoy the Generative Erase feature on Windows 11.
