A Remarkable Milestone
At nearly 95, John Suk stands as a beacon of resilience, being the oldest person in Niagara with a functioning kidney transplant. This April 22, not only does he celebrate his 95th birthday, but also 22 incredible years since he received his life-changing kidney transplant.
From Near-Death to New Life
In 1998, at the age of 67, Suk learned that a rare kidney condition had thrown his active retirement into turmoil, leading to kidney failure. Under the expert care of Dr. Anthony Broski, a nephrologist at Niagara Health, Suk faced a daunting journey filled with hope.
"Dr. Broski is the best," says his daughter Ethel Branderhorst, highlighting the unwavering support from the medical team that guided her father through these tough times.
Against All Odds
Placed on the waiting list for a transplant nearly immediately, Suk endured five years of thrice-weekly dialysis—a grueling routine akin to a part-time job. The breakthrough came just days before his 73rd birthday during Easter 2003.
With a new approach to transplant eligibility, Dr. Broski and his team aimed to redefine the limits on older patients. Suk became a pivotal figure in this shift, leading the charge for older adults in need of life-saving transplants.
Setting New Records in Transplant History
Fast forward to 2023, where an 87-year-old man in Markham became the world’s oldest kidney transplant recipient, a milestone made possible by trailblazers like Suk.
"Age doesn't define health," emphasizes Dr. Broski, reflecting on how Suk’s successful transplant paved the way for others.
A Leap of Faith
On the day of the surgery, during the SARS pandemic, Branderhorst faced heart-wrenching uncertainty when she dropped her father off at the hospital door. With no visitors allowed, this brave 72-year-old ventured alone into surgery, uncertain of what lay ahead.
Suk recalls, "I went in and the next thing I knew, I was in bed," marking the beginning of a new chapter.
A New Lease on Life
April 21, 2003, became a pivotal date as Suk embraced life without the confines of dialysis. With his medical team’s expertise and community support, he thrived beyond expectations.
More than two decades later, Suk’s kidney functions better than many recipients years his junior—an incredible achievement attributed to his commitment to health and medication compliance.
Navigating Life's Challenges
Though health challenges have arisen post-surgery, Suk’s faith and determination shine brightly. Recently hospitalized for unrelated health issues, he remains an inspiring figure, showcasing perseverance.
Branderhorst beams with pride, saying, "It’s quite incredible to be part of his journey. We are thrilled for him, he has accomplished so much."
