Empowering Seniors Against Sarcopenia
In a heartfelt mission to educate the public, Dayle Kaye, an inspiring 80-year-old grandmother from 100 Mile House, is raising awareness about sarcopenia—a degenerative disease robbing seniors of their muscle strength and mobility.
What is Sarcopenia?
Defined by the Cleveland Clinic, sarcopenia is an "age-related progressive loss of muscle mass and strength," often leading to debilitating muscle weakness. This condition can arise from nutritional deficiencies and a sedentary lifestyle, and its effects can be felt severely, sometimes as early as the age of 30!
A Personal Struggle
Dayle's journey began with alarming signs of weakness. "I was over 200 pounds, and I suddenly felt weaker and weaker. One slip on some ice left me lying there for ten minutes before anyone found me," she recounted. Distressingly, Dayle found it increasingly difficult to perform tasks she once managed effortlessly, like pulling a 200-pound sleigh.
The Shocking Truth
A heart episode that landed Kaye in the hospital in Kelowna was a turning point for her. It was during this visit she learned that sarcopenia can start to silently wreak havoc on the body as young as thirty. "You might not notice the gradual loss, but before you know it, it hits hard. For me, the change happened almost overnight—it was a slap upside the head!"
