INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — In a surprising twist to the sports world, Matt Petgrave, the player involved in a tragic incident that claimed the life of Adam Johnson nearly two years ago, has officially signed with the Indy Fuel in the ECHL, marking his return to hockey.

The Indy Fuel announced last Friday that Petgrave will be joining their roster for the upcoming season. His return comes after he faced immense scrutiny and a lengthy investigation following the on-ice tragedy.

On October 28, 2023, tragedy struck during a hockey match between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers when Petgrave's skate accidentally cut Johnson’s neck, leading to his untimely death. Initially arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, Petgrave was later cleared of any charges in April, allowing him to pursue his career once again.

Sean Hallett, CEO of Hallett Sports, the team’s owner, expressed support for Petgrave's return. “After in-depth discussions with him and his previous coaches and teammates, we believe he should be afforded the opportunity to continue his playing career,” Hallett stated. He assured that the team is committed to the local community and believes Petgrave will be a positive influence.

Expressing gratitude, Petgrave said, “I am thankful to the Fuel organization and the city of Indianapolis for allowing me the opportunity to continue my professional career in the sport I love.” He has not played since the tragic incident but is eager to step back onto the ice.

Before his overseas stint in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and England, the Toronto native had a notable career in North America, including several seasons in the ECHL and American Hockey League, where he earned an ECHL All-Star title in 2017-18.

As the ECHL serves as a critical developmental league just two tiers below the NHL, all eyes will be on Petgrave as he attempts to reintegrate into the sport amid the backdrop of past controversies.
