Massive Cocaine Bust at Coutts Border Crossing: What You Need to Know!

In a shocking development, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has made a significant drug seizure at the Coutts border crossing between Canada and the United States.

On March 8, 2025, a 26-year-old man from Calgary was apprehended after border agents discovered a staggering 108 kilograms of cocaine concealed within a commercial vehicle originating from the U.S.

Benjamin Tame, the CBSA director for southern Alberta, commented on the operation, stating, “Officers performing their regular duties encountered this substantial shipment of cocaine while examining goods and individuals entering our country.” Following the arrest, the individual has been charged with both importation of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with intent to traffic. He is set to face trial in Lethbridge on May 7.

This latest drug bust comes just weeks after CBSA reported two other significant seizures at the same crossing, amounting to nearly $3 million worth of cocaine and methamphetamine allegedly being smuggled into Canada.

The uptick in drug interceptions highlights ongoing concerns regarding drug trafficking at the border, even as enhanced security measures have been implemented.

In an official statement regarding the drug seizures, Tame emphasized, “Our officers regularly intercept these kinds of drugs, whether or not they make the headlines.” The joint operation that led to the latest bust involved collaboration between the CBSA, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Calgary Police Service, indicative of a coordinated effort to combat drug smuggling.

It is believed that these narcotics were destined for Calgary, raising alarms about the impact such drugs could have on local communities.

Superintendent Jeff Bell from the Calgary Police remarked, “By intercepting these drugs, we are safeguarding our communities and making our cities a safer place.”

Remarkably, in 2024 alone, CBSA reported seizing over 1,300 kilograms of illicit narcotics during drug smuggling attempts into Canada.
