In a strategic move to combat the surge in respiratory illnesses, medical masks will once again be mandatory in health-care settings across British Columbia, effective immediately. This decision, confirmed by CTV News through an internal memo from the Ministry of Health, aims to enhance safety for both patients and health-care staff.

The directive outlines that all patients and their companions must don masks in emergency departments and waiting areas. During treatment, patients will be required to wear masks if instructed by health-care professionals. Staff members will also be mandated to wear masks in all patient care areas and are expected to use higher-grade personal protective equipment, like respirators, in high-risk situations.

Workers in long-term care facilities are required to wear masks in patient care zones, with the exception of when they are eating or drinking. However, visitors to assisted living or mental health care facilities are exempt from the mask rule if they are only visiting one individual resident.

Exemptions also apply to children under five years old, individuals unable to wear masks due to health issues, those needing assistance with masks, and anyone communicating with someone who is hearing impaired. Importantly, individuals who can wear masks but opt not to, citing personal preference, are not considered exempt.

As respiratory illnesses—including influenza and RSV—continue to increase, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control reports stable yet early signs of a resurgence in COVID-19 cases as of the latest update for the week of December 22-28.

Previously, a universal mask mandate was enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic but was lifted in spring 2023. In October of the same year, the requirement was reinstated due to the onset of the respiratory illness season, with plans to reevaluate in April 2024.

Although the ministry has not issued a public announcement regarding this new policy, further details are expected to follow Wednesday morning. As cases rise and respiratory viruses proliferate, experts and health authorities emphasize the importance of masking in health-care environments as a critical measure to protect vulnerable populations.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the situation unfolds.
