Provincial Workers Demand Better Wages

In a bold move, the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU), representing thousands of provincial government workers, has amplified its job action, igniting a fresh wave of disruption across British Columbia.

Strike Expands to Liquor and Cannabis Warehouses

As of Monday, the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (BC LDB) and cannabis warehouses have officially joined the ranks of striking workers. Alongside this, five additional ministry sites in Victoria and Vancouver have entered the fray.

With over 10,000 public service workers now participating in this strike at 36 locations throughout the province, including 28 active picket lines, the union has declared a significant escalation.

Ongoing Job Action and Refusal of Overtime

Thus far, employees at four liquor and cannabis distribution centers have refused to work overtime, a strategic move following three weeks of sustained job action aimed at pressuring the government.

Union Leaders Stand Firm Amidst Government Stalemate

BCGEU President Paul Finch expressed frustration with the government's unwillingness to negotiate, stating, "We can no longer minimize disruption. The government’s low wage offer signals impending cuts to vital public services, and we will escalate our actions until we receive a fair wage mandate."

Demand for Fair Wages and Impact on Cannabis Retail

The union is pushing for a wage increase of 8.25% over two years, while the provincial government’s latest proposal stands at just 4.5%. This disagreement has led BC Cannabis Stores, the retail face of the BC LDB, to announce it will cease accepting new online orders, with any orders placed after September 18 expected to be canceled.

The Future of Public Services at Stake

As tensions rise, workers remain steadfast in their mission to secure better compensation. The stakes are high, with the future of public services hanging in the balance.
