Major Delay for LaSalle Causeway Temporary Bridge
Kingston residents, brace yourselves! The long-awaited temporary bridge at LaSalle Causeway, initially set to open on September 30, 2024, is now facing delays. Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has announced that the new opening date is now Thursday, October 3, 2024.
The temporary bridge, designed to alleviate congestion for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians crossing the Cataraqui River, has been postponed due to "additional measures required to ensure the bridge can be safely secured and is safe for operation." This comes after significant complications surrounding the old bascule bridge, which was demolished after being declared beyond repair following a mysterious incident during maintenance in April 2024. Since the closure, traffic disruptions at the Waaban Crossing have turned into a daily nightmare for those traveling from the east end to downtown Kingston.
PSPC officials had previously committed to an end-of-September opening for the bridge, but recent inspections have necessitated further precautionary measures, leading to the updated timeline. In a public statement, PSPC expressed regret over the delay acknowledging the substantial impact this has on local residents and businesses, noting they appreciate everyone’s patience during these challenging times.
As Kingston prepares for the late opening, the bridge is also set to allow marine traffic through the navigation channel on October 15, 2024. This will further connect the East and West sides along with facilitating travel for boaters—or so it is hoped.
In response to the delays, city traffic management will be adjusting signal timings around LaSalle Causeway and Waaban Crossing to help accommodate the new traffic flow starting October 3. Kingston Transit services will also align with the reopening date, introducing new route changes that offer improved access across these vital transportation links.
Mark your calendars! The opening is set for 6 p.m. on October 3; after months of waiting, many are eager to see substantial progress. Don't miss our coverage on updates as this situation continues to develop, and stay informed on how to navigate Kingston’s ever-evolving traffic landscape!
