End of an Era for Wayland Bar & Grill

THUNDER BAY — In a heartfelt transition marking the end of an era, Gary Pulice, a long-time fixture in the Westfort business community, is set to retire after 51 years in the industry, with the last 15 being spent as the beloved owner of Paulucci's Wayland Bar & Grill.

Gary Pulice's Journey

Pulice's journey began with his family operating a nearby confectionary before they took the plunge and acquired the Wayland on January 18, 2009. "At the time, it was run down, but we recognized the incredible potential in the neighborhood. We dedicated ourselves—my whole family was involved in fixing things up and getting it running properly," Pulice recounted in an emotional interview.

Transitioning to New Ownership

Having served his customers who quickly became friends, Pulice announced that the popular family-run establishment will be transitioning to new ownership in January 2025. Reflecting on his decision to retire, Pulice noted that he was approached by buyers earlier this year while considering the future without his daughter, who manages much of the operation, also planning to retire. "My children didn't want to take over, and after discussing it with them, I felt it was time to make a change," he explained.

A Promise of Continuity

Pulice emphasized the importance of finding the right new owners. "I wanted to make sure I sold to someone I felt good about. We poured our heart and soul into this place; I wanted to leave with my head held high and no regrets." He was glad to hear that the new owners, local residents and brothers Jamie and Dillon Baratta, aim to retain the existing staff and maintain the core values of the establishment. Their plans mainly involve improving the kitchen facilities—a welcome sign for the loyal patrons of the Wayland.

Customer Reassurance

"I understand that people can be resistant to change, even if it's ultimately for the better," Pulice acknowledged. "I've heard customers ask if everything will be different; I assured them this is simply a change of leadership."

Retirement Plans

As for his retirement plans, Pulice isn't rushing to make decisions. He looks forward to spending quality time at the family camp with his grandchildren and might even enjoy a brief getaway.

The Future of Wayland Bar & Grill

In a committed pledge to uphold the legacy of the Wayland Bar & Grill, the Baratta brothers, already owners of two thriving Norteños Taqueria restaurants in Thunder Bay, expressed their appreciation for the Paulucci family's hard work. "The Wayland means a lot to us, and we want to continue what Gary and his family have built. We're determined to keep the Wayland rocking and thriving," Jamie Baratta stated.

Conclusion

The upcoming transition promises to be a seamless one, keeping the heart of the Wayland alive while introducing fresh energy and enthusiasm. Regulars can rest easy knowing their favorite local gathering spot is in compassionate and capable hands.
