Lebanon Takes a Firm Stand Against Hamas Threats

In a bold declaration on Friday, Lebanese authorities made it clear that Hamas will face the 'harshest measures' if it attempts to launch attacks from Lebanese territory. This warning comes on the heels of multiple detentions of Lebanese and Palestinians suspected of firing rockets into northern Israel.

National Security Above All

The Higher Defense Council, Lebanon's leading military authority, emphasized that no faction, including Hamas, would be permitted to jeopardize the country's stability. Brig. Gen. Mohammed al-Mustafa stated, "The safety of Lebanon’s territory is paramount," reinforcing the nation's commitment to maintaining sovereignty at all costs.

Escalating Tensions in the Region

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, the Palestinian group has launched multiple assaults against Israel from Lebanon, prompting Israeli airstrikes that have resulted in significant casualties, including the assassination of prominent Hamas military leaders.

Strengthening National Authority After Conflict

In the wake of the recent 14-month war with Hezbollah, Lebanon is striving to reassert its control, especially in the southern regions bordering Israel. Last month, authorities arrested several individuals linked to rocket fire that provoked intense Israeli retaliatory strikes. Notably, Hezbollah denied any involvement in these attacks.

Call for Disarmament of Illegal Weapons

During the High Defense Council meeting, which included key officials such as the president and prime minister, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam urged for all 'illegal weapons' to be relinquished to the state. This plea highlights Lebanon's push for a unified stance against militancy.

Upcoming Political Engagements

Adding to diplomatic tensions, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to visit Lebanon later this month, a move that may have significant implications for regional politics as Lebanon grapples with the aftermath of ongoing violence.

Continued Airstrikes Further Complicate Situation

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November, Israel persists with near-daily airstrikes over Lebanon, claiming the lives of civilians and Hezbollah affiliates alike, thereby complicating the already fragile security situation.
