Exciting Changes on Broadway!
The iconic Toys "R" Us location in Vancouver's Fairview neighborhood is about to undergo a major makeover! Notices posted at the site reveal that Sobeys, one of Canada’s grocery giants, is moving in!
What’s Cooking at the Former Toy Store?
While details are still under wraps, plans indicate significant renovations for the expansive 11,500-square-foot space at 1154-1174 W Broadway. The projected construction work includes electrical upgrades and tenant improvements, slated to kick off on May 26, 2025, with an investment exceeding $100,000.
Suburban Supermarket Boom!
Currently, Fairview has limited grocery options, with a Meinhardt and No Frills located a few blocks away. However, the neighborhood is buzzing with growth potential, particularly with the upcoming Broadway subway project expected to boost residential density. More people means more demand for grocery stores!
Adding to the excitement, a new City Market Loblaws store is also set to debut nearby in early 2026, marking a significant retail evolution in the area.
Heritage Sign’s Fate Hangs in the Balance!
One interesting point of concern is the fate of the historic Bowmac sign, a relic from 1958 that’s become a symbol of Vancouver’s vibrant neon history. Once the largest freestanding sign in North America, it now stands in the shadow of the city’s skyscrapers. What will happen to this beloved piece of heritage as Sobeys takes over remains a mystery!
Parking Lot Predicament!
Questions also arise regarding the fate of the current parking lot above the store, which is operated by Diamond Parking. With a sizeable grocery store in the making, this lot could transition into grocery store parking or see a change in management altogether.
As always, Vancouverites will be keenly watching these developments unfold. What do you think of yet another grocery giant setting up shop in the area? Let us know!
