While scientists have successfully tracked the auroral markers for Jupiter's other Galilean moons, Callisto had remained a mystery—its footprint elusive even to the advanced Hubble Space Telescope! However, thanks to NASA's Juno mission, which has been studying Jupiter since 2016, researchers have finally uncovered the first evidence of Callisto's auroral footprint.
This groundbreaking finding comes from a team led by Jonas Rabia at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie (IRAP), including experts from renowned institutions like NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics (MIfA).
Conquering Challenges: How Juno Captured Callisto's Signature!
Capturing Callisto's faint auroral signature posed quite a challenge. Positioned just above Jupiter's own more brilliant auroral oval, Callisto's footprint required precise timing to be observed. The Juno team had to wait for the main auroral oval to shift aside, which allowed them to focus on Jupiter's polar region effectively.
In September 2019, a significant solar event shifted Jupiter’s magnetosphere to lower latitudes, akin to solar storms on Earth that drive the northern lights further south. This fortunate cosmic occurrence paved the way for scientists to finally detect Callisto's auroral footprint, shedding light on the energetic particles, electromagnetic waves, and magnetic interactions at play.
