A Stellar Community Unites in Curiosity

The Pembina Valley Astro Club is on the rise! Founded by passionate stargazer Kenton Dyck, the club thrives on connecting with fellow enthusiasts who share a love for the mysteries of the cosmos.

"We have to spread the love of science somehow," says Dyck, who travels with his telescope to enlighten new audiences. His mission? To turn curiosity into community.

Stargazing: Where Passions Align

Dyck emphasizes the unique connections forged through their stargazing events. Whether attracting hordes of attendees or just a handful, each gathering reveals how hobbies intersect around the shared wonder of the universe.

"I keep finding that the principles behind our interests often connect us, despite being seemingly different," he explains, showcasing the universal curiosity that ties people together.

First Starry Encounter in Steinbach

One of Dyck's memorable experiences was at his first Astro Club visit to Steinbach, where he faced an unexpected challenge—an uphill battle literally!

"Turns out they have one of the rarest things in central Manitoba— a hill!" he chuckles, referring to Abe's Hill, a local tobogganing wonder. Carrying a 160-pound telescope up the incline was no easy feat, but the effort was worth it.

"We had about 40 to 45 people show up, and we stargazed until almost 1:00 AM! It was an unforgettable night," Dyck recalls.

Anticipation Builds for the Harvest Moon Festival

Get ready for the grand event! The next big gathering for the Astro Club is set for the Harvest Moon Festival in Clearwater, promising breathtaking views of the night sky.

"We’ll be observing not just one, but potentially five or six planets during our late-night vigils! As the final planet sets in the west before dawn, it’s a sight you won't want to miss," Dyck shares excitedly.

Adding to the spectacle, a waning full moon will join the party, rising around 3:00 AM—providing a chance to explore deep sky objects before its light takes over.

Empowering the Stargazing Community

With renewed enthusiasm in Steinbach and excitement for the Harvest Moon Festival, the Pembina Valley Astro Club is quickly becoming a mecca for skywatchers across southern Manitoba. Dyck tirelessly shares his passion for astronomy, inviting all curious souls to join in the adventure.
