In a heart-wrenching revelation, Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin opened up about his fiancée Carolina Matovac's traumatic health ordeal that nearly cost her life. Just this summer, while vacationing in France, Matovac faced a major heart failure that shook the couple to their core.
The nightmare began when the 25-year-old started feeling unwell, and things quickly escalated. Rasmus recounted, "Fortunately, she received CPR on multiple occasions, and up to a couple of hours at a time to keep her alive, which ultimately saved her life. Without this lifesaving intervention, the outcome would have been unimaginable. It's hard to even think about the worst-case scenario."
After being stabilized, Matovac was transferred to a hospital in France, where she spent weeks on life support before being granted a second chance at life through a heart transplant. Remarkably, she was eventually able to return to Sweden for her rehabilitation.
Dahlin expressed a sense of relief as he revealed that she is on the path to a full recovery. The couple, who share the same birthday, has been inseparable for several years, and their bond has only deepened through this harrowing journey.
As Dahlin prepares for the upcoming NHL season, he acknowledges the struggles of balancing his professional life with the emotional weight of Carolina’s recovery. Delaying his arrival in Buffalo to be closer to her, Dahlin is determined to support her during this challenging time.
In sharing their story, Dahlin aims to raise awareness about the importance of CPR training and organ donation. He expressed profound gratitude to the emergency responders and healthcare professionals who played a crucial role in Carolina's survival. "We cannot say thank you enough to all organ donors, and we are forever appreciative of the new life that organ donation has given Carolina," he wrote.
Dahlin, the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft and a rising star, finished sixth in the Norris Trophy voting last season, making a powerful statement on the ice with 68 points across 73 games. As the Sabres aim for their first playoff appearance during his tenure, Dahlin's focus remains not only on his career but also on the lessons learned through adversity.
Reflecting on their life-changing journey, he remarked, "While Carolina is still working through her rehab, she has shown incredible determination and spirit. This has been the most challenging chapter of our lives, yet we have emerged stronger and more grateful than ever."
