Groundbreaking New RSV Immunization Clinic Opens at Milton District Hospital – What You Need to Know!
A new era in child healthcare has arrived with the launch of the Halton Healthcare Paediatric RSV Immunization Clinic at Milton District Hospital, a groundbreaking initiative made possible through a collaboration between Halton Healthcare and Halton Public Health. This innovative clinic is a vital step towards enhancing access to vital immunization services as part of the Ministry of Health’s new universal infant Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) prevention program.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus is a significant threat, especially for young infants and children, making it a top concern for families. Until recently, free vaccinations were exclusively reserved for high-risk infants, particularly premature babies. However, under the new provincial guidelines, all newborns and babies born on or after January 1, 2024, will be eligible for this life-saving immunization at no cost. Additionally, high-risk toddlers under the age of two can also obtain this critical protection.
The Impact in Numbers:
Facts about RSV are alarming: it’s a highly contagious virus that nearly every child will encounter by age two. It spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces, and while it often causes mild symptoms in older children, it can lead to severe illness in those under two.
30-40% of pediatric hospitalizations at Halton Healthcare during cold weather months are linked to RSV.
A staggering 70% of infants hospitalized with RSV have no underlying health issues other than their young age.
About 2% of all infants are hospitalized due to RSV within their first year.
The new immunization offers an impressive 80-90% protection and lasts up to six months. The single-dose treatment, known as Beyfortus, is a safe and effective antibody designed specifically to prevent severe RSV infections. Administered with parental consent, the immunization can even be given to newborns while still in the hospital after delivery. For infants under 12 months or those aged 12-24 months at high risk, appointments can be made through primary care providers or directly at Halton Healthcare's dedicated RSV clinic.
Opened on November 4th for newborns born in the hospital, the public clinic will officially start accepting appointments on November 18th. Families can book their spots beginning today, November 11th, by calling 905-203-7937. The clinic will operate Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and weekends from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Located on the north side of Milton District Hospital, the entrance is conveniently accessible via Lot 2, and no OHIP card is required for the immunization.
Experts expect that this shift in eligibility will dramatically reduce the number of hospitalizations among young children this season, enhancing the overall health and safety of our pediatric community. Don't miss the chance to protect your little ones – make an appointment today!
