The ambition of the Korean luxury brand Genesis has reached new heights as it ventures into the competitive realm of high-performance vehicles with its newly launched sub-brand, Magma. Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis’ Chief Creative Officer, shared his enthusiasm for the Magma initiative, stating, “Genesis Magma presents an exciting opportunity to push the boundaries of performance and luxury for fresh interpretations in high-performance vehicles.” This bold move introduces an innovative alternative for drivers seeking more than just the conventional offerings in the market.

The first model from the Magma line-up, the Genesis GV60 Magma, is set to hit production soon, with sales slated to commence in Korea next year, followed by a rollout in other markets, including Canada, anticipated around 2025. The GV60 Magma is expected to mirror its concept counterpart's striking design—the vibrant fastback SUV is already generating buzz for its impressive performance capabilities. Based on the same electric vehicle platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, we can expect the GV60 Magma to deliver at least 641 horsepower, courtesy of its dual electric motors and all-wheel-drive system.

But it's not just about raw power. Donckerwolke emphasized the brand's commitment to the overall driving experience, stating, “While speed and performance are important, the Genesis Magma program will look beyond, prioritizing the driving experience to kindle the joy of sporty driving with effortless comfort.” This careful balancing act seeks to harmonize thrilling performance with luxurious comfort—something no other manufacturer has successfully achieved.

The challenge lies in merging the elements of sporty driving and comfort, which often seem mutually exclusive. While performance generally necessitates hard suspension and aggressive seating, comfort leans towards a plush, smooth ride. However, advancements in technology, particularly with innovations like hydraulically interlinked suspension systems and 48-volt active dampers, are bridging this gap, albeit slowly.

Officially, Genesis has unveiled that Magma models will boast a wider and lower body design, equipped with exclusive chassis and suspension components tailored for enhanced performance. The company has promised several key attributes for each Magma model: unspoken dominance, captivating control, and sharpened immersion—all designed to create a dynamic and engaging driving experience.

The anticipation around Magma reached a fever pitch this past summer during the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed in England, where the GV60 Magma concept made its exhilarating public debut. Not only did it dazzle spectators with its fiery orange hue and impressive agility, but it also clinched victory in the four-seater production car category and secured an admirable overall 16th place in the weekend's timed shootout.

Professional driver Gethin Jones praised the GV60 Magma's engineering excellence, stating, “The car’s responsiveness and power were impressive throughout the event, and its ability to handle the hill-climb with such precision is a testament to the engineering behind it.”

Adding to the excitement, renowned racing veteran Jacky Ickx has come on board as a Genesis Brand Partner, lending his extensive expertise to the Magma program.
