In an extraordinary display of collective effort, the Exoplanet Follow-up Observing Program (ExoFOP) has celebrated a monumental achievement: surpassing one million user-submitted data files! This landmark, reached on March 3, highlights the power of collaboration in the search for exoplanets, as researchers from all corners join forces to explore the universe.

What Makes ExoFOP So Important?

Unraveling the mystery of exoplanets is no simple task; it involves a meticulous process of observation and analysis. Created by the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI), ExoFOP serves as a vital hub that allows scientists to share critical data to confirm the existence of these distant worlds. The program has made significant contributions to nearly 4,000 of the 6,000 confirmed exoplanets thanks to the efforts of over 1,700 dedicated contributors.

David Ciardi, the Deputy Director of NExScI and ExoFOP lead, spoke about the importance of community in exploring our universe. From its roots supporting the Kepler mission, ExoFOP has evolved into a broader collaboration involving various observatories like TESS.

Reflecting on its humble beginnings, Megan Crane, the lead developer of ExoFOP, recalled how each database entry originally represented a solitary exoplanet around a single star. "We should have known better!" she said with a laugh, highlighting the transformation as more complex planetary systems were discovered.
