Community Pharmacies Step Up for Chickenpox Vaccination

Big news for parents and guardians! Starting January 2026, some community pharmacies in England are gearing up to take part in the NHS chickenpox vaccination program, according to Community Pharmacy England (CPE). This rollout promises to make necessary vaccinations more accessible for children.

Government Announces Comprehensive Vaccination Program

On August 29, 2025, the government revealed that GP practices will begin administering the measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine as part of the routine childhood vaccinations. This significant health initiative will also be launched in Wales, and while Scotland is expected to follow suit, an exact date remains unconfirmed.

Why Is This Vaccination Crucial?

Chickenpox, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, can lead to serious health complications beyond its itchy rash, including bacterial infections and, in rare cases, stroke. The government emphasizes that this vaccination effort will help dramatically reduce chickenpox cases and protect children from severe outcomes.

Say Goodbye to Costly Private Vaccinations!

Currently, private chickenpox vaccinations are available at pharmacies for approximately £150 for two doses. However, this new initiative will allow eligible children to receive the vaccine absolutely free of charge through the NHS.

Pharmacies Already Integral to the Vaccination Effort

In some areas, pharmacies are already administering the MMR vaccine. There’s even a pilot program underway in Greater Manchester for children who missed previous doses, showcasing how community pharmacies are becoming crucial in filling vaccination gaps.

Commitment to Expanding Vaccination Programs

Alastair Buxton, director of NHS services at CPE, expressed strong support for expanding NHS vaccination programs through pharmacies. He noted, "CPE is committed to increasing the range of NHS vaccination programs commissioned from pharmacies, including for childhood vaccination. Some pharmacies are already set to update their services to include this new vaccine in 2026."

Addressing Vaccine Coverage Gaps

The announcement comes as recent data from the UK Health Security Agency reveals concerning trends—nearly one in five children are starting primary school without receiving the important 4-in-1 pre-school booster jab. While 91.9% of children have received their first MMR dose by age five, coverage levels across Scotland and Wales exceed the World Health Organization’s 95% target.

Flu Vaccination Fees Frozen for Seventh Year

In addition, CPE criticized the government for freezing flu vaccination fees for the seventh consecutive year, highlighting rising operational costs for pharmacy owners. The call for change underscores the ongoing efforts to support community pharmacies in delivering vital health services.
