Endangered Salamanders on the Move

Endangered salamanders are set to receive crucial protection as they embark on their spring migration across parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). These remarkable creatures, notably the Jefferson salamander, face significant threats from urban sprawl, but local municipalities are stepping in to ensure their safe passage as they make their way to breeding ponds under the cloak of night.

Closure of King Road

Beginning this month, Burlington, Ontario, will once again close a section of King Road specifically to protect these amphibians. This annual initiative, in place since 2012, supports the migrations of Jefferson salamanders that reside along the Niagara Escarpment. From March 24 until April 9, King Road between North Service Road and Mountain Brow Road will be off-limits to vehicles.

York Region Takes Action

Additionally, York Region is taking further measures to assist these vulnerable species. From March 24 through May 2, Stouffville Road, located between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street, will be subject to intermittent overnight closures. This route stretches through the biologically rich Oak Ridges Moraine, an area crucial for salamander habitats.

The Jefferson Salamander's Journey

The Jefferson salamander spends its winter nestled in abandoned rodent burrows, rock crevices, or other damp locations shielded from freezing temperatures. As spring approaches, these greyish amphibians—adorned with blue speckles—emerge on warm and rainy nights to navigate back to their ancestral breeding ponds, often returning to the same places where they were born.

Environmentalists have raised alarms about the threat posed by urban development, with the endangered salamander frequently cited as a key example of the impact of southern Ontario's rapid urbanization. Moreover, climate change looms as an imminent danger, as rising temperatures threaten to dry out vital spring pools faster than ever before, further jeopardizing the salamander's breeding success.
