Introduction of Virtual ER

In a move to bolster medical support in Newfoundland and Labrador, health officials have announced the availability of a Virtual ER at the Connaigre Peninsula Health Centre located in Harbour Breton. This service will be operational from Friday, November 15 at 8:00 a.m. until Saturday, November 16 at 8:00 a.m.

Purpose and Functionality

The introduction of a Virtual ER is designed to ensure that residents still have access to emergency care 24/7, particularly during periods of local physician shortages. Patients can continue to visit the emergency room at Connaigre Peninsula Health Centre, where they will find an onsite healthcare professional along with a physician or nurse practitioner available via video call. This innovative approach allows patients to receive immediate attention in emergencies, mimicking the experience of a traditional Emergency Room while utilizing technology to enhance the level of care.

Health Hub Initiative

Moreover, for residents experiencing non-emergent medical issues who do not have a family physician, NL Health Services has implemented the Health Hub initiative. This service is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on weekends from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. It's essential to note that these hours may vary depending on physician availability, so potential patients are encouraged to call ahead to the Gander Medical Clinic at 709-381-0112 or 709-381-0338, or the Killick Clinic in Grand Falls-Windsor at 709-292-8404. Due to high demand, residents should be prepared for longer wait times for both in-person and virtual consultations.
