On June 3, 2025, an exciting new initiative took off as the National Geographic Society and Rolex unveiled the Perpetual Planet Ocean Expeditions. This ambitious project aims to launch a series of scientific adventures across the globe's oceans, from the icy Arctic to the bustling Atlantic.

Exploring Our Blue Planet

Funded by Rolex and driven by the expertise of National Geographic Explorers, these expeditions target all five ocean basins: Arctic, Pacific, Southern, Atlantic, and Indian. The goal? To blend cutting-edge science with local ecological knowledge, exploring the pressing challenges of marine system changes and collaborating with coastal communities to craft innovative solutions.

Shining a Light on the Sherman Basin

At the forefront of this pivotal exploration is Dr. Kristina Brown, a dedicated National Geographic Explorer, who is currently studying the Sherman Basin in the Kitikmeot Sea of southern Canadian Arctic. Her groundbreaking research holds the key to understanding marine food security for the local Inuit, making it crucial in the face of climate change.

Research at Sea

Dr. Brown's oceanographic studies are being conducted aboard the Arctic Research Foundation's R/V Martin Bergmann. In close partnership with the Gjoa Haven community, her work will help sustain marine food security as the Arctic Ocean continues to warm.
