Thirsty Data Centres: A Booming Industry in Drought-Stricken Mexico

In the heart of Mexico lies Querétaro, a picturesque colonial city celebrated for its stunning aqueducts. Yet, beneath its charming façade, this city has emerged as the country's data centre capital, hosting major players like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services.

The surge in data centres – massive buildings housing thousands of servers – is creating a paradox in a state struggling with one of its worst droughts in a century. With projections estimating over $10 billion will flow into data-related investments over the next decade, the thirst for technological expansion is palpable.

Why Querétaro? The Strategic Advantage

Querétaro's appeal stems from its strategic location at the crossroads of Mexico, offering proximity to the capital and crucial high-speed data connections. According to Arturo Bravo from Ascenty, the region benefits from favourable government policies and a supportive infrastructure, making it a hotspot for tech companies.

The Dilemma: Water vs. Data

As data centres grow, so does their consumption of water. Some rely on evaporation methods that can guzzle up to 25.5 million litres annually. Comparatively, Microsoft claims its local centres use outdoor air for cooling 95% of the year, yet it still consumed 40 million litres in a year, highlighting the enormous demand.

The region is facing severe water shortages; residents like activist Teresa Roldán express frustration over the prioritization of water for industry over human needs. "We hear there might be 32 data centres, but water is what's needed for the people, not for these industries," she states.

Air Quality Concerns Add to the Crisis

Beyond water, concerns also mount regarding air quality from diesel backup generators used by data centres. Experts warn of the pollutants released, affecting the health of nearby residents. The pressure is on authorities to ensure that air quality regulations protect the community.

The Future is Digital: More Data Centres on the Horizon

Despite the challenges, the growth trajectory for data centres in Querétaro is set to continue. Ascenty plans to roll out additional facilities, anticipating exponential growth alongside AI advancements. "The industry will continue to expand as AI grows. It's a promising future," Mr. Bravo predicts.
