Darth Vader's Legendary Lightsaber Shatters Auction Records
In a breathtaking display of fandom and nostalgia, a lightsaber wielded by Darth Vader in the beloved Star Wars saga has been sold for a staggering $3.6 million (£2.7 million) at an auction in Los Angeles.
This remarkable piece of cinematic history, featured in timeless classics like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, stole the spotlight during the first day of sales, marking a milestone for memorabilia collectors.
According to Propstore, the Buckinghamshire-based auction house behind the sale, this lightsaber is now the highest-priced Star Wars item ever to be auctioned.
Brandon Alinger, chief operating officer of Propstore, expressed the significance of this record-breaking sale, stating, "To see a Star Wars lightsaber—the symbol of one of cinema's greatest sagas—become the highest-valued piece of the franchise ever sold at auction is incredibly special."
More Treasures From the Auction
While the auction was held in California, many items up for grabs originated from UK productions. A bullwhip, belt, and holster originally created for Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade also found a new home, selling for $485,100 (£360,000).
Fans were also treated to other iconic memorabilia, including a Platform 9 3/4 sign used in several original Harry Potter films, which significantly exceeded its estimated sale price, eventually going for $138,600 (£102,573) instead of the anticipated $20,000 to $40,000 (£14,925 to £29,850).
A Landmark Moment for Film Collectors
Mr. Alinger called the outcome of the auction a significant event, not only for Propstore but for the entire realm of film collecting. He noted, "It speaks to the enduring cultural power of Star Wars and the passion of fans and collectors who view these artefacts as touchstones of modern mythology."
With the lightsaber's record sale, the legacy of Star Wars shines even brighter, cementing its status as a cherished piece of cinematic culture.
