In a surreal scene that has stunned motorists, six adventurous cows have taken over Highway 400 west of Newmarket, causing significant delays for drivers en route to their weekend getaways.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently engaged in a determined effort to round up these runaway bovines, which have been spotted frolicking dangerously close to traffic. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt shared the unusual update via a post on the OPP Highway Safety Division's X account, noting the herd has been gallivanting just north of Highway 9.

"We've got about six different cows running up and down the highway here," Schmidt remarked, adding that the cows are proving to be less than cooperative as officers work alongside their owners to load them safely back into trailers. This tricky situation has led to heavy traffic, with congestion affecting both directions.

A brief 42-second video captured a light-colored cow curiously gazing at the camera from the median, further emphasizing the bizarre nature of the encounter.

Traffic tracking app Google Maps indicated that the northbound backups extend as far south as King City, while the southbound lanes are similarly bogged down just southwest of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

As for how these cows found their way onto the bustling highway, that mystery remains unsolved. OPP officials promised to provide updates as they work tirelessly to restore order to the road.

Stay tuned for more updates on this udderly chaotic situation!
