In a groundbreaking move, the Department of Astronomy has taken a significant leap toward unraveling the mysteries of space with the establishment of the Cosmic Frontier Center. On October 23, the center proudly announced its inaugural class of fellows aimed at delving into the early history of the universe.

The Cosmic Frontier Center is dedicated to investigating early cosmic phenomena, including black holes and galaxies, to gain a deeper understanding of how the universe came into existence. The center has welcomed two new Frontier Fellows – a postdoctoral student and a PhD candidate – who will be pivotal in both observational and theoretical astrophysics research.

"We are eager to make significant discoveries, especially with the capabilities provided by the James Webb Space Telescope," stated Volker Bromm, co-director of the Cosmic Frontier Center. "However, to achieve this, we need exceptional talent."

Established earlier this year, the fellowship program aims to attract such expertise. Bromm emphasized that these fellows will not only bolster the center's talent pool but also enhance its existing technological network. The program will promote collaboration between the Frontier Fellows and the seasoned faculty at the center.

Vasily Kokorev, one of the newly appointed fellows, specializes in observing black holes from the early universe. He articulated the intense pressure associated with this field of study, stating, "You’re always on the lookout. It’s like finding a gold mine; as soon as you start digging, you’re anxious that someone else might jump on your findings."

The center recently received promising new data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, which concerns early galaxies and is expected to refine its research agenda moving forward. This influx of information could prove pivotal in making groundbreaking discoveries in the coming months.

Bromm expressed his optimism not only for the center but for the astronomy field at large. "Every day, astronomers are making new discoveries. It’s this incredible sense of wonder and excitement; it feels like being a kid in a toy store every morning you check your inbox," he shared.
