Refused Service Due to Appearance

Amit Ghose, a 35-year-old from Birmingham, has faced a lifetime of challenges due to his facial disfigurement, a result of Neurofibromatosis type 1. Recently, while visiting a coffee shop in London, he encountered blatant discrimination when staff refused to serve him. The employee looked him up and down, claiming they weren’t serving anymore, despite the cafe being open for business. "It felt like everyone was staring at me as if I were some kind of ghost," Amit recounted.

From Bullying to Empowerment

Amit’s early experiences were marred by bullying and ostracism, with children at school making cruel jokes and taunts. At a Halloween party one year, a classmate told him he didn’t need a mask—he had one for life. This shattered his self-esteem and made him hide his face from the world.

However, after realizing the importance of self-acceptance, Amit began sharing his story in schools, aiming to empower children to embrace their uniqueness. His journey inspired him to self-publish a children's book titled 'Born Different', which aims to help kids accept themselves regardless of societal standards.

Transforming Pain into Purpose

Motivated by a recent distressing encounter in a park, where strangers laughed at his appearance, Amit took a stand. “I thought to myself, I need to do something about this,” he said. He wishes he had access to resources like his book when he was younger to help navigate his struggles.

Acceptance Through Love and Social Media

Amit credits his wife, Piyali, for teaching him the 'art of acceptance.' Persuading him to share his story on social media transformed his life. Initially hesitant about platforms like TikTok, he now has nearly 200,000 followers and shares his life experiences as a way to motivate others.

A Real Message of Confidence and Kindness

Amit’s mission extends beyond just his own story. He emphasizes that everyone faces insecurities and challenges, regardless of visible differences. He encourages the notion that if we accept and celebrate who we are, we can build confidence and inspire others to do the same.

Looking Forward: A Podcast and More

In addition to his speaking engagements, Amit plans to launch a podcast where he will feature guests with similar stories, including Oliver Bromley, who was denied entry to a restaurant for scaring customers. "We want to inspire people through our shared experiences," he stated enthusiastically.
