In a shocking case that has rattled the Markham community, a 31-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly filmed a young person in a unisex changeroom at the Milliken Mills Community Centre.
The Alarming Incident
The unsettling event occurred on August 21, 2024, at the community centre located at 7600 Kennedy Rd. According to police reports, the victim spotted a cell phone aimed in their direction, leading them to believe they were being recorded without consent.
Suspect's Bold Maneuver
Authorities from the York Regional Police (YRP) revealed that the suspect was reportedly standing on a bench inside a nearby stall during the incident. Thankfully, the victim was unharmed and promptly reported the upsetting situation, but the suspect managed to flee the scene.
A Breakthrough in the Investigation
After an extensive investigation, police identified a suspect and conducted a search warrant at his residence in Markham on January 3. This led to the arrest of Qinxing Shi, who now faces two counts of voyeurism.
More Victims Possible
Concerned for the safety of the community, the YRP has released Shi's image, urging anyone else who might have been affected to come forward. Police also disclosed that the accused frequented the Aaniin Community Centre at 5665 14th Ave. in Markham between January and August 2024, raising concerns that there may be other victims.
