A Life Well-Lived: Remembering Karen Ann O’Laney

With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Karen Ann O’Laney on August 24th, 2025, at the Aberdeen Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born to Charles and Mildred (Byrne) MacKinnon, Karen dedicated her life to caring for others.

Karen was a devoted Personal Care Worker (PCW), embodying the essence of unconditional love. Her generous heart extended beyond humans to the numerous animals she cherished; from crows that called to her in the backyard to the cats and grand-cats she pampered with toys and treats.

Crafting was another passion of Karen's, as she was often found busy with her hands—whether quilting, knitting, painting, or crocheting. Her creative spirit was always at play, but nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her grandchildren, making sure they were wrapped in love and affection.

In her free time, Karen loved to explore the world with her husband Dave, embarking on motorcycle adventures, hunting for treasures, or enjoying a game of Bingo with her sisters.

Cherished Memories and Lasting Legacies

Karen is survived by her beloved husband of 38 years, David O’Laney, alongside their daughters Sam, Sarah (Dylan) Knowles, and Elisha O’Laney. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her grandchildren—Amber, Kyra, Coady, Corvin, Summer, Kaylee, Mady, and Luna—as well as her brothers Chuckie (Anna), Clarey (Juanette), Jamie (Janet), and David (Dene), and sisters Charlene, Donna (Dennis), and Gwen.

To honor Karen’s extraordinary life, a celebration will be held on Wednesday, August 27th, at 11 AM at the Eagles Funeral Home in Westville. In line with her wishes, Karen will continue her journey through cancer research at Dalhousie Medical, a testament to her enduring spirit of caring and compassion.
