This geomagnetic storm is triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) expected to reach Earth shortly before midnight.

What Makes These Northern Lights Possible?

Geomagnetic storms occur when CMEs, giant clouds of charged particles released from the sun, collide with Earth's magnetic field. Scientists categorize these storms on a scale from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme). A G3 storm, like the one anticipated this New Year's Eve, is strong enough to potentially create stunning auroras but is generally manageable, with only minor disruptions to power and communications.

Where Can You See the Aurora Borealis?

To witness the aurora, you’ll need to be away from bright city lights, as darkness enhances visibility. Unfortunately, many major urban centers will experience a challenge due to light pollution and expected cloud cover. However, hopeful sky gazers could find opportunities in less populated regions.

Optimal areas for spotting the Northern Lights include coastal British Columbia and the southern Interior, particularly during the early hours of New Year’s Day. Additionally, viewers in southwestern Ontario and the southwestern Maritimes may also get lucky.
