Job Openings on the Rise in Canada

Exciting new data from Statistics Canada reveals a remarkable uptick in job vacancies across the nation, particularly in the construction industry! As of June, Canada is seeing a notable bounce back with job vacancies hitting 492,000—a slight recovery from the declines noted in previous months.

A Year of Ups and Downs

Despite the overall increase in job openings this June, the year-over-year comparison shows a notable decline of 59,200 vacancies (-10.7%), according to the latest report. The construction sector, however, defied the trend by showcasing significant growth.

Construction Sector Booms!

In a standout performance, job vacancies in construction surged by 4,600 positions (+13.1%) to reach a total of 39,500 in June. This increase has helped to partially compensate for the losses suffered in May when vacancies dropped by 5,400 (-13.4%). The job vacancy rate in this sector climbed to 3.2% in June, a positive shift from 2.9% in May. However, it’s worth noting this marks a slight decrease from June 2024's rate of 3.6%.

Wages on the Rise!

In addition to more job openings, average weekly earnings are on an upward trajectory! Reported figures indicate a 3.7% increase year-over-year to $1,302 in June, building on a previous 3.3% rise in May. Moreover, month-over-month earnings grew by 0.7%, highlighting a healthy boost in income as Canadian workers navigate the evolving labor market.
