Breaking News: Health Canada Greenlights Pfizer-BioNTech’s Latest COVID-19 Vaccine! What You Need to Know!

2024-09-24

In a significant development in the fight against COVID-19, Health Canada has officially approved Pfizer-BioNTech's updated vaccine, Comirnaty, on Tuesday.

This marks the third authorization of its kind, specifically formulated to shield against the most recent variants of the virus that are currently circulating in the population.

What’s New?

The updated mRNA vaccine targets the KP.2 subvariant of Omicron, an evolution designed to replace the older version that focused on the XBB.1.5 subvariant.

This strategic update comes on the heels of last week’s approval of Moderna’s revamped Spikevax vaccine and Novavax's protein-based Nuvaxovid, also tailored for different variants.

In a proactive move, Health Canada has instructed provinces and territories to phase out older COVID-19 vaccines.

This decision is intended to streamline the vaccination process as Canada braces for the upcoming fall respiratory virus season.

When Can You Get Vaccinated?

While the timeline for the rollout of these new vaccines is still under provincial and territorial jurisdiction, Public Health Agency of Canada spokesperson Anna Maddison assured that Canada has procured an ample supply of vaccines for all from fall through winter 2024.

Who Is Eligible?

The revamped Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are now authorized for both adults and children aged six months and older, while Novavax's vaccine is approved for adults and children aged 12 and up.

Notably, the Novavax product monograph indicates that safety and efficacy for children under 12 have yet to be evaluated.

In anticipation of this fall’s vaccination season, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has issued recommendations prioritizing specific groups for updated vaccinations.

This includes adults aged 65 and older, residents of long-term care settings, individuals with pre-existing conditions, those from Indigenous and racialized communities, pregnant individuals, and essential workers.

Current COVID-19 Situation

As of September 8, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada's latest wastewater surveillance data, the national COVID-19 viral activity remains moderate.

However, alarming spikes in COVID-19 levels have been reported in several locations, including Yukon and parts of British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
