Apple's AI Ambitions: Will We Have to Wait Until iPhone 19?

Remember the bold claim "Built for Apple Intelligence" that touted the iPhone 16 series? If recent insider revelations from Mark Gurman are any indication, that promise may not be realized until at least 2027!
Apple Intelligence, the company’s ambitious suite of AI features, has become the talk of the tech town—and not necessarily for the right reasons. With many of its promised functionalities still a work in progress, Apple’s offerings currently lag behind competitors' innovative AI capabilities. The centerpiece of this initiative, a smarter and revamped Siri, has faced continual delays.
Amid this chaos, Apple finds itself in a tight spot, even facing lawsuits over alleged false advertising. Executives are reportedly expressing "intense personal accountability" for the setbacks, as they scramble to expedite AI features for users. In an unexpected twist, Apple is rumored to be considering a collaboration with Google for its cutting-edge AI model, Gemini.
Despite these efforts, the two critical advancements for Apple Intelligence—including a shift to Large Language Models (LLMs) for Siri and enhanced chips for AI servers—aren’t expected to materialize until 2027. This timeline is particularly disheartening for Apple users eagerly awaiting the upgraded Siri since acquiring their iPhone 16s. Initial hopes pinned on a debut alongside the iPhone 17 seem to have evaporated.
Enhanced AI server performance could revolutionize user experiences, but it’s all contingent upon the actual rollout of these features. Unlike Apple, competitors like Samsung with its Galaxy S25 series, Google with its Pixel 9, and even Chinese firms such as Huawei and Xiaomi are already delivering robust AI functionalities.
Interestingly, 2027 marks the 20th anniversary of the iPhone and Apple is projected to unveil two new models, including a long-anticipated foldable phone and a sleek all-glass iPhone Pro with a seamless display.
By the time these models hit the market, it’s hard to imagine that Apple Intelligence will still hold consumers' attention as they gravitate toward these exciting new designs.
