A Sense of Community and Participation
As election night approaches, David Shelton is ready to raise a glass with fellow Americans at his local bar after an intense campaigning season. Having knocked on countless doors in Canada, Shelton, a member of Democrats Abroad, is keen to see greater participation among the estimated 25,000 Americans residing in Windsor and its vicinity.
The Importance of Nonpartisan Engagement
In this pivotal moment for democracy, he emphasizes the importance of nonpartisan voter engagement. "We want everyone to have access to vote, and we believe that it's better for everyone," Shelton stated. His efforts are mirrored by a larger movement, as approximately 600,000 U.S. citizens living in Canada prepare to cast their ballots from abroad—marking the highest expatriate turnout outside the United States.
Historical Low Turnout
Historically, however, voter turnout among Americans in Canada has been dismal, hovering around just eight percent in past elections. This year, the stakes feel higher, and both Democratic and Republican activists are keen to inspire their fellow citizens to adopt a more proactive voting mindset.
Republican Perspectives
Georganne Burke, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, recalls the challenges faced by Republicans in Canada, noting their lesser numbers compared to Democrats. Despite the lack of large-scale watch parties, Burke and her friends plan to gather privately to witness the results unfold together. “It will be private, but I’m optimistic,” she shared, reflecting on her past experiences during the tumultuous 2020 election.
Democratic Preparations
In contrast, the local Democrats are gearing up. Colleen Mahaffie, another member of Democrats Abroad, has organized a sold-out ticketed gathering in Toronto, aiming to enhance awareness among Americans living in Canada about their voting rights, whilst still cheering for Kamala Harris. “We want Americans abroad to know they can vote from anywhere in the world,” Mahaffie explained.
Excitement in Montreal
In Montreal, excitement is palpable as Andrew Holman noted an overwhelming number of RSVPs to Democrats Abroad's various watch parties. The atmosphere will be electric as many await the election results that could redefine the political landscape. With high anticipation, local establishments like McLean's Pub even plan to mix election coverage with NHL hockey, accommodating the diverse interests of attendees.
Collaborative Efforts Across Canada
From Ottawa’s Metropolitain Brasserie hosting a collaborative election event with the United States Embassy to Halifax’s student union-run pub planning a watch party, Americans across Canada are ready to make their voices heard—even if they are watching thousands of miles from the action.
Celebration Despite Uncertainty
As for Shelton, despite maintaining a nonpartisan approach throughout his campaigning, he plans to don his Harris-Walz T-shirt. Stationed at the Bourbon Tap and Grill alongside fellow Americans, he declares, "We will not have the final results on election night, that's absolutely sure. But we’ll be here, celebrating a long and hard-fought campaign."
A Shared Commitment to Democracy
With both hope and excitement buzzing, Americans in Canada are prepared for an unforgettable election night filled with camaraderie, reflection, and a shared commitment to democracy. Will those in Canada lead the charge in boosting voter turnout? Only time will tell!
